My students need a class-set, 20, of ukuleles and gig bags.

I have the honor of teaching music to 650 amazingly talented and hardworking students. These students are full of energy, dedicated, and always yearning to learn something new, and while we may lack instruments, the enthusiasm of these kids exceeds far beyond a typical school.
Passionate, committed, and curious; my students are always willing to overcome any challenges presented to them.
Our school is located in Roseville, Michigan less than two miles from Detroit. What was once the site of the bustling automotive industry and a thriving middle class, has been struck by the recession, struggling to survive. While parts of the city are being revitalized, economic reconstruction has yet reach the communities of my students who are majority low-income. With limited funding, the school struggles to offer as many opportunities as other school districts.
These students are dedicated, passionate, and the most kind-hearted kids I have ever known. They are determined to make the most of what they are given, and take opportunities far less for-granted than most kids their age. My students deserve to have a music education that parallels their passion and enthusiasm for the arts.
Ukuleles will give opportunity for my upper elementary and middle school students to expand their limited knowledge of string instruments without the horrendous price tag. Not only will this introduce them to playing instruments, but allow them to become familiar with an instrument commonly played outside of a music classroom. With increased interest, my hope is that students find a passion that will kinder a more dedicated music involvement.
With these ukuleles, my students will be afforded an musical experience that enables them to create and perform.
There is a plethora of sheet music that has the chords to popular songs, exciting kids to learn the tune and sing along. Once kids have the knowledge to play simple chords, they’ll be able to play the along to many songs, encouraging students to practice and master the instrument. Not only will getting ukuleles increase the students' level of dedication, but also teach them the diligence it takes to learn an instrument.
Not only does my classroom already lack many instruments, but supplies are especially scarce for the older students. Ukuleles would be very much appreciated a school that lacks funding for a traditional band or orchestra program.
