Our school is an A+ school, which means we use Arts Integrated Instruction. We serve students in grades Pre-K through Sixth. They are a vibrant and excited group of students who love music!
71% of our student population is designated as low-income, with 15% special education, and 19% limited English proficiency.
For many students, the ability to read music and play an instrument opens up opportunities to pay for a college education, through grants and scholarships. The earlier they learn to play music, the bigger the benefit to their abilities!
My Project
Currently we have 18 ukuleles for a class of 28 students. We would like to have enough ukuleles for every student, as well as the teacher. We need some ukulele picks so that strumming is easier. Also, we currently have no extra strings in case of breakage or a way to store the instruments.
This project will allow us to maximize instruction by ensuring that every student has what they need to learn.
The students have been enjoying learning to play the ukulele but it is difficult to get equal time for the students. One of our current goals is to learn a song to accompany the lower grades in a performance.
Music reading is closely related to math concepts by promoting spacial recognition in reading graphs and division of time.
