This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students love to listen to hip gop music and really enjoy the songs that they hear on the radio. They love to dance as well as sing, and perform at various times during the school year. They are very musical and love to play the beats on any kind of percussion instrument. They all want to play the electric rock band instruments that I have in the music room and I would love to set up the room into small group areas so that they can play and make music together. In North Miami, at the school that I teach, the mix of kids ethnicities are 90% Haitian American, 5% Spanish American and 5% other ethnic groups. I have just returned from the University of South Florida, Tampa Campus that offered a Learner-Centered Music Master Class where students had hands-on experience with the latest in music technology.
I would love to give my students the experience of being able to make music that they compose themselves using electric instruments and recording technology just like the music that they hear on the radio.
My Project
These materials will add on the some of the instruments that I already have to make music class more enjoyable. Different levels of classes can benefit from using the Ukuleles and Drums. My students are in a Title 1 school that loves music and performance. We perform for the Holidays, Martin Luther King Day and Black History month as well as for 5th Grade Graduation. We want to have a talent show as well, which could feature our fabulous drummers. All the kids want to bang and hit something to make percussive sounds. It would sound so much better using an instrument than banging on the table with a pencil. The ukuleles are well loved, especially in rainbow colors!
