I serve a wonderfully diverse group of about 800 students between the ages of three and ten. Many of my students are from low-income households. Due to life circumstances, very few of my students are exposed to musical experiences and enrichment opportunities outside of school. In order to grow musically, most depend on the limited resources available to them at school.
Hands-on activities, especially those involving instruments, are the experiences that most ignite a passion for music in children.
Instrument time is everyone's favorite! Musical concepts come to life when students are given the appropriate tools. Learning to play and master an instrument is empowering! It gives students a sense of accomplishment and the confidence to dream big and try new things.
My Project
Several months ago, I received a guitar and ukulele donation and immediately began using both to accompany songs in class. Many of my students had never seen a ukulele in person and quickly became fascinated with the "tiny guitar."
My students love watching me play so much, they instinctively pretend to strum along on the strings of their imaginary ukuleles.
The more I read about the use of ukuleles in the music classroom, the more I want to provide MY students with this opportunity. Not only will our new ukuleles add interest and excitement to instruction, they will provide new performance opportunities as well!
Due to the size and simplicity of the ukulele, it is the perfect entry-level instrument for elementary students. These ukuleles will serve as hands-on tools to teach my students about chords, how to play with others, and the joy of independent musicianship. The thrill and success of learning to play a new instrument is an opportunity that all children deserve. With your donation, you are making that experience possible for my students.
