This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend an ethnically diversified Title I STEAM Academy. Most walk to school, with the exception of a few Special Day Class students. Many students are from government-subsidized neighborhood apartment complexes.

The parents of my students do not have the means or time to be active in the classroom or to even be able to do things that will enrich their child's education.

However, their students are eager to learn in innovative ways that have not previously been offered them.

My Project

I have just completed my first academic year at our school. We were so fortunate to have our district provided us with 40 ukuleles. I have learned to play this fun instrument along with my students and we have learned most of the basics, including chords, string names and the various body parts of the ukulele.

I would like to train students to tune their ukuleles using battery operated tuners.

Towards the end of the school year, I taught a few students how to use a tuner and they used their recess or lunch periods to assist me. Learning to tune ukulele will help save classroom learning time, develop the students' musical ear, help them learn the names of ukulele strings, and identify pitches.
