Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
These sensational students live in California! These student scholars find school to be fun and love to learn. The classroom is a safe space for them to discover, explore, and experiment. Their families are diverse and many of them are first-generation students in the U.S. public school system.
Most of our school’s students receive free or reduced-cost meals.
Our classroom is often the place that exposes these student scholars to extra curricular activities such as music. I have seen the power of incorporating music into all aspects of education. These students thrive and are inspired when music is incorporated into their education and I believe this is the key to creating lifelong learners.
My Project
All of our students have one thing in common, the love of music. Currently, we have been incorporating music with my ukulele and will soon have 12 ukuleles to work with in small groups. In class, the ukuleles will be used to teach music education and supplement all subjects taught in the classroom. With our music classroom program, students will learn the basic idea of rhythm in our songs/poems and music theory. Practicing these concepts with an ukulele will build the self-esteem these students need for their social and emotional development. As students progress, they will be able to socialize while practicing and eventually play in front of an audience. The ukuleles will play many roles and interweave with our curriculum. Students will be able to use our ukuleles for retelling stories, practice high frequency words, counting and forces and motion. Music is key for inspiring life long learning.
These ukuleles will enhance our classroom culture, academics and social emotional needs of our students.
This set of 12 ukuleles will give all students a chance to play ukulele together by creating a class set (12). With the power of the ukulele, these students social emotional and academic development within our classroom will be enhanced with the incorporation of music.
