My music students work hard every day to learn despite economic status which allows them all to qualify for free lunch. The city public school where I teach serves 500 young musicians, about 85% of whom are African-American.
The ukulele that I use to accompany songs and games every day draws my students in and engages them, and they deserve the chance to hold and try out one of their own.
These instruments will complete our class set and would allow each student to play their own string instrument, adding to the percussion and woodwinds they learn with already. This will literally bring harmony to my classroom!
My Project
We have been funded for a half-class set of ukuleles, but this project would build on that start and allow students to hold their own instrument. This project will double each child's playing time!
Help bring more color and harmony to our classroom!
Every child will spend some time playing the ukulele in our school year, with special focus throughout 5th-grade classes to allow them to explore harmonies and how they function in music, better than when they play our current instruments like a recorder or hand drum. The students cannot wait to use ukuleles, as I have said I would try to bring them for two years now.
