I have been playing ukulele for years, and was very excited when some students approached me about starting a club at our school. Brett, Nick, Maria, Jessica, Jill, Owen, Jishnu, Mike, Alli, and Tony are enthusiastic and want to start playing and teaching as soon as possible.
Some of our members already have ukes; others do not. Some may not be able to afford one. Having school ukuleles would insure everyone who comes to the club, even brand new members, would have a uke to play. The club aims to make all students interested in ukulele feel welcome.
Already I can see leadership skills developing among the members of our club as they discuss what they want the Ukulele Club to represent (beyond simply playing ukes). They talk about how the culture among ukulele players is all about peace and love. The mission statement of the club reflects their desire to spread these values, through ukulele lessons, jams, and performances for the school and community.
In Their Own Words
Our goals for Ukulele Club are to spread joy to those around us and enrich our lives with the music of a beautiful instrument. The club will offer free lessons and listening opportunities to any student who is interested. We'd like to have school ukuleles in order to launch our club and encourage new members to join, even if they are financially unable to get a ukulele of their own.
The leaders of our club look forward to taking this opportunity to teach other students the way of the ukulele. Through learning how to play an instrument students will also develop additional qualities and skills: self-confidence, teamwork, social skills, etc. We will spread the word about the club at school and seek out opportunities to represent our school in a positive way.
Students today are under a lot of stress. Playing and listening to ukulele is great, healthy stress relief. It also builds social skills to play in a group. We hope ukulele club to be a safe haven for lovers of music and students needing a creative outlet.
