Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As the sun rises on each new school day, hundreds of eager kids get ready to learn at the little school on the hill in Canyon Country, California.
"Music is the art of thinking with sounds," according to Jules Combarieu and that is the philosophy we want to bring to our students.
Each student needs to be able to express themselves not only through academic data, but also through the notes of music.
As they enter our music room, our students are ready for a hands-on musical, sensory experience. They sing songs from all the corners of the globe, and use simple rhythm instruments to create our own special versions of of songs. The kids are fully engaged in class and now are ready to learn about music in a whole new way.
Currently, students work hard on rhythms and vocals, but we need an instrument to learn chords and harmony. Harmony is one of the core ingredients in a great musical education. Please consider helping us to bring the sounds of the ukulele to to our students.
My Project
The 3rd-6th grade students have performed on rhythm sticks, boomwhackers, recorders and hand drums. We are in need of a chordal instrument to learn harmony, chord progressions, and song forms. Each student will have their own ukulele to use during music class each week.
The ukulele is one of the best instruments for beginners to learn about music and music theory.
Each student will learn basic ukulele chord shapes and popular and classical song forms. They will also learn basic note and tab reading. The ukulele also helps children develop eye-hand coordination as well as independent movement of fingers. I hope to inspire them to learn more about music as they continue to grow.
