Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing! They love music. It is engrained into their daily lives. They continue to impress me with their talents, creativity, and enthusiasm for learning. My students enjoy exploring a wide variety of music through listening, singing, dancing, and playing instruments ranging from xylophones and recorders to drum set and electric guitar!
Our kids live in a tough inner-city neighborhood, but that does not stop them from doing incredible things!
Our school community is warm, caring, and positive. We unfortunately do not have access to much of a budget, but that does not get in our way of making great things happen. It is my hope that YOU can help my students reach new heights. Please help enrich their lives through the gift of music!
My Project
I am looking to supplement my modern band program here at school. My older students have been working on learning popular songs using the modern band format: guitars, drums, keyboards, vocals, and even GarageBand on iPads. The next step for us: UKELELES!
Ukeleles are becoming a staple in music classrooms all around.
They are great for small hands to learn melodies or play chords. They are easy to hold and super fun to use. They also make learning more accessible for students whole have trouble holding a guitar.
In addition to ukeleles, my classroom needs speaker stands for our PA system and additional microphones to get more singers involved. Also, we need batteries for our keyboards and refills for my label maker to label instruments. These materials will help to fill out a full modern band ensemble. Students will then have opportunities to perform for our school community at our monthly meetings. These experiences are very powerful in the development of young musicians.
