Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are very diverse and have many needs. 100% of my students receive free breakfast and lunch because of their economical status. Many students also receive a free snack after school and backpacks full of food for the weekends. My students come to school to have more than their educational needs met.
Life is hard for my students - for many of them school is the only bright light they have in their lives.
The zoning for my school is large and includes many hotels and motels. This means that some of my students are even homeless - staying in motels only when enough money is found to sleep in a bed.
To make things more difficult, so many of my students have too few people who invest in their lives outside of our school building. Our teachers and staff work to be intentional in showing them we care and in teaching them to care.
My Project
Ukuleles are simple enough to quickly learn and feel a sense of accomplishment. Giving my students an opportunity to play the Ukulele will help to build their confidence, providing them with something they can take beyond my classroom.
I believe the more experience my students have in building confidence and accomplishment in my classroom, the greater their opportunity will be to move beyond their circumstances.
Confidence and accomplishment are qualities they can take with them to high school, college, and job interviews beyond.
In addition to these wonderful advantages, the Ukulele is an important tool in teaching chordal structures and musical expression through performance. The Ukulele aids in the development of both the ear and of personal expression. However, while musical objectives and technique can be taught through the use of the Ukulele, they are secondary to the social lessons that are being taught through the music that they will play on the Ukulele.
