Mikaili, Jose, Camila and D'ion are busy middle schoolers in a changing world. These students led the write up of this particular project. They met after school to brainstorm and plan this project. These students are delightful souls who come from varied backgrounds, but mostly from under-served communities.
They are super hard working, and want to succeed despite the obstacles that they face. These fabulous teens and pre-teens are always excited to learn new things.
We are a Title I public middle school, and most of our students qualify for free lunch. Over half of our kids live in housing projects down the street, and we are very appreciative of your support. Our students are enthusiastic, talented, energetic young people, eager to make a difference in this world. Most aspire to attend college.
When a group of disparate students gather to form a new club, magic can happen. Friendships are formed, bridges between communities are built, and a campus becomes a happier, healthier place. We plan to bring our instruments and perform with the children at the two elementary schools down the street, in addition to holding sing-a-long concerts on campus. Join me in supporting our young people. Talk about building teamwork and emotional empathy...
In Their Own Words
Our lunch club began in October. Senior citizens from the neighborhood come each week to teach us the ukulele. Our club is so much fun! We learn. We play, and each week is a kanikapila, which in Hawaiian means a jam session where everyone plays together. We hope to add a new tenor uke for everyone to try, share, play and enjoy!
It takes leadership to build a club. As members, we get the word out that uke club is GREAT! We want to spread the word. We have 15 members, but want to open the club to even more kids because we are trying to build our club top be even bigger.
Our goal is to perform in front of the school. First, we plan on doing a flash mob where we gather in the lunch table area and suddenly appear with our ukes. Imagine everyone's surprise when we start playing and singing! We are also having a performance in May for parents, students and the community. What is cool is that we are going to pass out lyrics so everyone can sing along with us at our May performance.
