Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Music education has proven to have a tremendous impact in the lives of elementary students by offering countless benefits such as increased self-esteem, stress relief, and problem solving skills.
I have the privilege of sharing my love for music with over 500 first through fifth grade students in a low-income school district.
My students love to sing, play instruments and create their own music as they demonstrate their creativity and grow as musicians each week. I aim to foster their interest in music and give them memorable musical experiences in my class.
My Project
Most days when my students enter the music room, their first question is "Can I play your guitar?" Their eyes light up when they have a few minutes at the end of class to take turns strumming while I play chords, and the feeling of accomplishment they gain from that moment is heartwarming to see.
I know that my students will be thrilled to learn how to play the ukulele in music class, as many of them do not have the opportunity to take music lessons outside of school.
A ukulele unit will give students a chance to utilize the skills we learn each week, such as reading music. My students will also learn responsibility and accountability by handling and caring for the instruments.
My goal is to show students in a fun and engaging way that with hard work and dedication, they can achieve anything they set their minds to - whether it's playing a musical instrument, conquering a challenging subject in school, or overcoming any other obstacle they may encounter throughout life.
