Joaquin, Miguel, Brooklyn and Blessing are busy middle schoolers in a changing world. These students led the write up of this particular musical project. They met after school to brainstorm and plan this project. These students are delightful, musical souls, who come from varied backgrounds, but mostly from under-served communities.
They are super hard working and want to succeed despite the obstacles that they face. These fabulous teens are always excited to learn new things.
We are a Title I public middle school, and most of our students qualify for free lunch. Over half of our kids live in housing projects down the street, and we are very appreciative of your support. Our students are enthusiastic, talented, energetic young people, eager to make a difference in this world. Most aspire to attend college.
As my students have told me through their words and excitement, music uplifts, and the opportunity to learn and play instruments in the classroom contributes to their well being, and happiness. My students look forward to coming to school, and of course, learning music is a huge incentive. Playing music together builds social-emotional skills. Our music club will also build leadership skills because my students will help and teach each other. Who knows, these hard working young people might even go on to become professional musicians! We need Snark clip-on tuners, a Michael Jackson songbook, a "2000's Decade" uke songbook, a "Peace, Hope and Love" songbook, extra batteries for our tuners, an LEPOWER 14 music stand light, and two uke staps. Learning an instrument builds the brain and heart. Join us!
In Their Own Words
None of us had ever even touched a musical instrument before meeting our teacher. In her English class, she actually has a keyboard, along with two guitars and ukuleles for her ukulele and guitar club. She recently pulled out her keyboard for us to play when we are done early with our work. I want to learn to write songs too!
Not only can we play during class, but our teacher opens up her room at nutrition and lunch and we get a chance to play then. We just can't get enough. We love our ukulele (and guitar) lunch club where we learn to play. We are going to spread the word that others across the campus can join us on the journey to learn to play! We will put up posters encouraging others to join us!
We want to get good enough to put on a performance at school. Well at least play for the young 6th graders, and maybe put on a concert for our parents. We are kind of shy. We need more tuners to stay in tune and straps for our ukes. We want to sound good and be in key. You can hold a uke without a strap, but uke players prefer using a strap. We can't get enough time or books or instruments to learn what we want to learn! When we play together, we bond and that helps us emotionally, for sure!
