This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Some students have a warm home to go home to, a meal on the table, clean clothes to wear to school, and parental support, but some students struggle to fulfill these basic needs. Many of the students in my school face the struggle of lacking basic needs.
The kindergarten through eighth grade students in my school are from a challenging urban community, and all of the students receive a free lunch each day.
When the students come to school, they are coming for more than academics: they come to school for at least two meals, basic clothing supplies, and compassion and support.
My Project
The students at my school have not had the opportunity to use instruments as part of their music education for quite some time. As a first year teacher, I walked into the school, and there were very few instruments to assist with music instruction.
Even though the school budget does not provide for instruments, my students deserve to have instruments that not only enhance their music education, but challenge them with personal growth as well.
Ukuleles are both solo and ensemble instruments. Not only will the students be able to growth in their own musicianship, but they will also be able to grow while working together. Providing my students with a classroom set of ukuleles will give the students an opportunity to flourish as both a musicians and as individuals.
