Our charter school has been in existence since 2014 and the women's high school basketball team has won a total of 10 games since their inception. Last season, the women's basketball program won 3 games with a slim roster of inexperienced players. The culture surrounding the women's basketball team at UCA High has been one of losing and accepting defeat. That, however, is changing with some new leadership.
At interest meetings, numbers from previous meetings went from barely double digits to at times nearly 40.
At tryouts, a total of 25 athletes showed up. The atmosphere in the gym was already different. Not only were there enough players with the skill and dedication to turn this program around, there were enough players to field a JV women's basketball team for the first time ever. Day in and day out, our student athletes are giving their all and making the best of the little equipment we have. Their dedication and heart has not wavered, and it is clear that the culture is already changing. They already excel in the classroom and are willing to do whatever it takes to excel on the court.
My Project
Our team needs new equipment and jerseys. We only have 10 practice jerseys for 18 girls, only one set of game jerseys, and 9 new basketballs. By having the proper equipment, correct numbers of equipment as well as working equipment, it will only help our team get better on the court. With new basketballs for games and warm ups, our girls will have the opportunity to play and practice properly. We are currently pumping up basketballs that deflate after just 2 or 3 practices. By reinvesting in this program, we can help the immediate future and long term goals of our basketball team. Rebuilding our basketball program becomes much more feasible without the worry of having to buy new equipment each year. In past years, the women's basketball team has had to work with hand me downs and old equipment, it is now time to change the culture in every way possible.
