Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This is an amazing group of students that my program has been working with all year long. They explored careers and all types of postsecondary options available to them. During the fall, they selected the institutions to apply to and we helped them with the application process. Some had the opportunity to visit the campuses nearby, but most have not been to the campuses outside of this area.
Most students come from low-income and first generation college bound families.
They need all the support they can get to reach their goals. 100% of our students completed the financial aid applications and most of them have applied for scholarships.
My Project
On May 1, 2019, my 12th grade students will take a field trip to participate in UC Berkeley's College Signing Day, an event that is affiliated with Michelle Obama's West Coast College Signing Day festivities. This event will celebrate my students' post-secondary decisions and next steps. During this event, my students will hear from college leaders, learn about how to successfully transition to college, participate in a college resource fair, and fun activities.
In order to support their next steps to college, we want to provide students incentives, including backpacks to support their transition to college.
We hope these incentives will add to the fun and excitement of the field trip experience and allow a few of our students to start off college with an important resource.
