Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My sophomore class is a terrific group of students! The theme of their work this year is reflected in our school motto: Ubuntu--I am because we are--which my students have taken to heart.
Our school is in a high poverty area, so when we plan any events that cost money, there are students who cannot participate. That is unacceptable to the class officers who are creating this project. They want their entire class to be able to celebrate the hard work they have engaged in all year.
If fulfilled, this project will meet my students' goal of having everyone participate. It's traditional for sophomores to attend Six Flags New England to celebrate the end of the school year and of state-mandated testing. In reality, however, only 1/3 of the class typically attends because tickets are so expensive. This proposal will lower the ticket price to a level where we think we can practice Ubuntu and celebrate our hard work as a class.
Our students have been fundraising all year for this project, which has required financial planning skills, time management, and community outreach. This project will bring together this diverse group of students in a celebration of the hard work they've done all year. The spirit of Ubuntu helps our students join together for a common goal.
In Their Own Words
The goal we are trying to accomplish is raising enough funds for our sophomore class trip to Six Flags. We want to reduce the cost of the Six Flags tickets so that the sophomore class can all participate together and enjoy themselves as a reward for finishing their final projects.
We as the class officers have the responsibility to take on the leadership of this project. We believe that by working together, we will make this happen. Earlier this year we ran several bake sales during all school lunches, organized a movie day for students during the holiday week, and reached out to a local business for a fundraiser.
Having the pleasure of taking our high school journey, we were taught the meaning of Ubuntu- I am because we are. Being sophomores, it's our first time experiencing academic stress on a new level. The stressors of both the ELA and Math MCAS in addition to an end-of-the-year Gateway Project, where extensive research must be conducted to produce a research paper and presentation that demonstrate student growth, causes our peer morale and motivation to be at an all-time low.
Following the ideas of Ubuntu, we want to encourage our peers to keep going and working hard with a reward trip to Six Flags. We're making it our goal to have everyone participate. We want to prevent academic and financial stressors from negatively impacting our classmates. We believe that this trip will encourage our class to join together in Ubuntu and will further our future academic success.
