Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Here I go into a new school, to a new grade level, with a million new ideas. After completing my Masters in Teaching English as a Second Language I understood the great importance of cooperative learning. Kids NEED to work together. Especially kids who don't know very much English.
These students come from low-income families.
Putting the political aspect aside, Title I means these kids don't usually get the experiences they need because of lack of resources or money at their homes; we provide them with the experiences necessary to become long life learners.
For example, we just came back from a field trip to the wildlife ranch. One of my second graders cried (literally cried) and when I asked her, "Why are you crying?" she said, "It's just that zebras are my favorite animal and I never thought I'd see one and I'm just so happy!" (all of this as she was bawling)
These kids lack many things others don't, but that doesn't mean that we can't make it better at school.
My Project
Both the You Read to Me and I Read to You Series, and the Partner Fluency Reading will be used as reading stations. It's nothing new, students read to buddies all the time. But as an adult I always wonder if it ever gets awkward; sort of like You Read I Stare. With these books and fluency passages they'll both have a clear part when reading and there will be less waiting around for the other to finish and more helping.
Having these resources in my classroom will help my students become better readers.
Working with partners helps build relationships. It also provides an opportunity for them to work on their interpersonal communication skills :)
