Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the excitement of your very first paid job? The thrill of receiving a paycheck? The joy of connecting with coworkers who became friends?
My students are an incredible group of 18-21 year olds who have intellectual or developmental disabilities, and who are looking for their first jobs!
Daily, they go to unpaid internships in our local community where they learn valuable work skills and work behaviors, get to know community members, and prepare for their first paid job.
My Project
My students spend their three years in the 18-21 Transition Program working toward gaining a paid job in the community. They volunteer at unpaid internships, they learn challenging new job skills, they practice and improve their social skills in a realistic employment setting. And once they turn 21, they exit into the "real" world where they work with a job coach to gain, learn, and keep a paid job.
The students would benefit from having a USB flashdrive where they could store the evidence of their hard work--a video resume, their digital portfolio, a copy of their paper resume.
All of my students have the opportunity to work with a job coach who wants all of the nitty gritty details of the student's work experience. By providing our students with a USB flashdrive on which to store all of the pertinent information (dates, contact information for employers, photos of the student hard at work, video resume for some students who do not communicate verbally), the student can work with their job coach to find a perfectly-fitting first paid job!
