Ms. McLeod from Lynn MA is requesting Supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 20 ukuleles to start an ukulele ensemble for the middle and high school. The music program at KIPP is growing and so is the excitement level.
"There's something about the ukulele that just makes you smile. It makes you let your guard down. It brings out the child in all of us." Jake Shimabukuro I hope to give students the opportunity to have even more smiles during the course of their day by providing fun music in a very accessible way.
Students who are enrolled in instrument specific classes get the opportunity to learn an instrument of their choice in a group setting.
Options currently include guitar, piano, and musical theater. The class popularity is growing and more students hope to participate next year. Over 80 percent of our students come from low-income families and are eligible for the federal free or reduced-price meals program. The population of students consists primarily of Latino and African American Students. Our school wide goal is for all students to attend college and receive a college degree. The core academic subjects are quite rigorous for students and more elective outlets are needed for their education to be well balanced.
The KIPP Academy Lynn Collegiate and middle school music program currently consists of two music classes. Music classes are open to all students in grades 6-12. High school music classes meet 50 minutes each day and middle school classes meet twice a week. Music classes are designed to teach the fundamentals of music through class projects and performances. Students who get to choose their instrument are excited about learning and have more investment and buy-in for the music making process. My ultimate goal is to provide music students with the basic skills and tools to continue with music as a lifelong activity that brings them joy. With these ukuleles, students will learn to read, perform, improvise, and create music. They will have opportunities to perform by themselves and with others, and will be able to contribute to the culture of their high school and middle school through music performances.
As we look towards the future of the KIPP music program, our main goal is to develop a more extensive instrumental music program that will include and lay the foundation for lifelong music participation.
Gypsters have expressed tons of interest and joy in learning the ukulele. Funds will allow our population of students the opportunity to pursue their musical interests while increasing electives options. Who doesn't smile when they see an ukulele?
