My scholars started a journey into a new program at our middle school as the first group of the Medical and Health Careers magnet. Eighty-nine percent of the student population is Latino/Hispanic with one hundred percent participating in a free or reduced-price lunch program.
Our program is meeting the needs of diverse learners and encouraging students of color to view representation within disciplines such as legal, medical, or entrepreneurial.
Our school is a college-going and preparedness culture and invites our scholars to visit museums and colleges.
The school has been granted a 1:1 Tablet program to inspire students to be creative and innovative. The tablet offers them opportunities to scan tables for measuring, record self-engineered rollercoasters in action, and make amazing portfolios showcasing their work. What students miss about having a laptop or Chromebook is access to a keyboard. The motivation to type a two-page paper lessens when having to tap on the tablet screen. A lot of the tech we are utilizing in our classrooms requires watching videos and writing explanations. I want to provide a class set of keyboards available to my scholars to use during instructional time to increase engagement in written activities and to allow for equitable access for my students with disabilities.
