My students in Honors English come from a diverse community of various incomes and opportunities, and struggle to meet the demands of 21st century learning outside of the school day. With limited resources, these students are unable to explore careers and technical skills that would benefit them in the future. Some will be the first members of their families to go to college, and all of my students want the opportunity to use these resources to independently inquire, explore, research and learn on their own terms! We are a school community that strives to enrich our curriculum with authentic, engaging and career-orientated materials to create globally empathetic citizens, who are excited about their futures!
My Project
My students are hoping to engage in the novel "American Chica: Two Worlds, One Childhood" as part of our 11th grade book study. 10 novels will allow our students to have rotating reading groups that can select a more diverse and culturally relevant text.
Literature gives students a platform to engage their voice and perspective.
I'm hoping to find more authentic texts that allow the students to engage in texts that much more relevant and authentic to their own experiences. We want to expose them to authors and titles that are culturally diverse, giving them a window into another perspective that might be more in tune with their own experience.
We plan to use the novels as part of our book study. Students will discuss the book critically and find ways to apply major themes and ideas to their own experience and the real world around them. Supplying them with questions, plus an opportunity to craft their own, we are hoping to engage in an authentic, project-based learning process. American Chica is just one of many texts we are really excited to present to students so that they can see how many different contemporary writers have stories to share that are just as relevant as previously canonized texts.
