I am a Math Teacher in a New York City Public Schools and I'm also a NYC Teaching Fellow. I am requesting a projector for a laptop for my classes. Math is a subject that many students struggle with. One of the most challenging aspects of my job is to demonstrate to my students how Math is all around us and to make Math "come alive" for my students. When I have a hands-on activity, my students stay focused and on-task. I have been using an overhead projector so that I am always facing my students. Writing on the chalkboard meant that I would have my back to the students at times. The classes I teach have a great deal of geometry and with the use of computer technology, would be able to provide more stimulating and interesting lessons for my students. I have found that when the students are interested and engaged in the lesson, they retain more knowledge and are able to do better on tests. I am requesting two projection screens. Not all classrooms have screens. I would like to have two screens so that in the beginning of the school year, I can have the custodians hang them in the rooms I am assigned to teach. In June, I will take them down, bring them home for the summer and have them reinstalled each September.
