My students are special because they are so diverse! We are a class that represents many cultures, races, religions, ideals and family types. Some are living in poverty. Some have suffered great loss. Each and every one is unique and important.
Our classroom is a magical place where this highly diverse group of students can come together as a community, to work towards a common goal.
What is that goal? The goal is to grow in knowledge, each and every day. Of course we learn about reading and writing and grammar and mathematics and science and history! But we also learn about community, about setting goals, about hard work, and about breaking things down and then building them up again. We learn about compassion and brotherly love, about respect and about how to become productive, responsible, thinking individuals.
Please consider donating to this amazing bunch of kids. Our classroom is their safe place, and it is often their only exposure to the wonderful opportunities that await them outside of this neighborhood.
My Project
Fifth graders love to move! In fact, it's nearly impossible for them to sit still. We have tried many seating options in my classroom, including rockers, yoga balls, floor pillows, stools, bean bags, and standing desks. All of these things allow movement while learning, and this has made a huge difference in the amount of time students stay on task.
After a couple of years experimenting with many different seating options, we keep coming back to one thing: swivel stools!
I have found that the stools are very comfortable for the kids, and they also allow me the ability to maintain order in the classroom. Some options we have tried, such as yoga balls and floor rockers, are a huge hit with the students. However, I have found these items to be difficult to manage with my very active bunch of kids. I kept having to "take them away" due to student misuse and the chaos they cause. One item that has been consistently successful are the stools.
These adjustable stools allow the students to easily change the height of their seat for their individual needs. The stools are on wheels, which glide easily across our carpet, allowing even more movement for kids and easy maneuverability for changing seating arrangements. And because the stools swivel 360 degrees, students are able to turn and talk, track me as I move throughout the room, or simply wiggle a little while they work. They love these stools, but since I only have a few, students find themselves competing for their use. This can lead to wasted time and arguments. I really need a stool for every student!
