I teach art to all grades pre-K to 5th in a school near downtown Los Angeles primarily attended by children who live in public housing. The great majority of the students are English Language Learners and qualify for free school lunch. Although these students live in one of the most culturally rich cities of the world, their day to day life does not typically expose them to that richness. The school is suffering from declining enrollment, and the school greatly benefits from enrichment programs such as specialized art education that draw in parents. The staff is a strong group of caring, professional, and long-dedicated members of the community.
A class set of these saws will allow my students to transform ordinary cardboard boxes into sculptures! Cardboard is too hard to cut with scissors for kids, yet it is a free resource. By supporting this investment in a safe tool, I will be able to do sculpture projects that I would not otherwise. Students will also gain the valuable life skills of construction, including sawing, with media that is safe and clean. I've worked with my 6 year old to try these saws out with great success and no injuries. These saws are a durable game changer for art educators, and free the creative imaginations of students in a range of ages.
