Our day starts with about 100 student-athletes from low-income backgrounds. More than half of these students athletes don’t have the basic safety/workout attire, shoes, or socks. As a staff, we want our kids to compete at the same level as their peers from other school districts.
Our student-athletes are composed of a majority Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders who live on Hawaiian Homestead and low-income rental housing projects.
They have a very limited perception of worldview because of lack of opportunities and travel outside of our small community. They have unique personalities, but they are very loyal and dedicated. No one knows their abilities because they are not portrayed to the public. The only representation of our community is negative media and below average demographics.
My Project
Lack of equipment prohibits proper training and preparation to compete with other schools with the top of the line facilities and equipment. Our school, NHIS, ranks last in the state for academic achievement. However, since we have been in charge of the program, 50 percent of our football athletes have earned honor roll/principal’s list accolades.
My student athletes will be able to train like the rest of the teams in our country.
A single piece of equipment will allow each student to take their game to the next level. They will learn how to train their bodies physically to perform the rigorous activities associated with the game of football. They will also learn safety procedures and proper techniques to minimize injuries.
For this project, we are requesting a Sony TV for our athletics conference and academic room. This TV will help with our football program in watching game film. This will also help with college coaches as they are able to come in and watch highlights and game films of our players. We will also use the TV to help students practice presentations for their academic classes.
