My students belong to a college-preparatory exam school in an urban district. They are high achievers. Many will be the first in their family to go on to college after they graduate from high school.
The students whom I teach are bright, dedicated, and curious.
They work hard to understand the material even though the resources which are available to them may be outdated. These students deserve the best and I can only give that to them with your help!
My Project
Over the past several years, my colleagues and I have been using Turnitin, a web-based system that allows teachers to assign written work (essays, projects, homework, classwork, etc.). Students submit their work on Turnitin for feedback and grading by the teacher. There are several benefits to Turnitin. For instance, Turnitin compares submitted work to everything on the Internet as well as work submitted by other students for plagiarism. Another benefit is that the feedback mechanism is very efficient and useful. I can mark up the text online, type written comments, record oral comments, and take advantage of correction tools (spelling, punctuation, etc.). Turnitin also allows peer editing so that I can allow my students to read and make comments on their peers' submissions. A new feature also allows students to submit questions to me through Turnitin during the writing process. Perhaps one of the most important advantages is that Turnitin serves as a portfolio of student work so that I can track progression of my students' work throughout the year.
Turnitin saves teachers like me much time, provides an online portfolio of student work, virtually eliminates plagiarism, and prepares students for the way most of their college work will be submitted.
Every year, our school struggles to pay the licensing fee for Turnitin. While the fee to use Turnitin is expensive, the program itself is invaluable to my fellow teachers and me, as well as to our students.
