Turning Struggling Students into Studious Scholars
My students need a Turn-In-Your-Work Organizer, storage, and a Classroom Organization Pocket Chart. They also need Close Reading Discussion Clips and a Building Fluency Card Bank.
By the end of the school year, I would like my students to develop a stronger love for reading. Many of my students are struggling readers and feel defeated by the task. My goal Is to help them gain confidence in reading by building their fluency and comprehension skills.
My students are an enthusiastic, diverse group of 5th graders, who are extremely eager to learn.
With this said, most of my students are very far below grade level and approximately 75% of them are struggling readers. Nevertheless, I am inspired by on a daily basis, as they continue coming to school with smiles on their faces, ready to learn, despite the fact that they come from so little. Our school is a Title I elementary school located in North Carolina, and 98% of our students come from low-income families. 98% of our students receive free and reduced lunch every day. Many of my students do not have any books at home to read each night.
My Project
The majority of the materials I'm requesting will go towards creating a more organized classroom for my students. Our classroom is pie-shaped, extremely small, and overcrowded. We are limited in our space. The book bins will help us organize our classroom library This makes moving around the classroom and finding places to properly store our materials difficult. This in turn, inhibits the learning that takes place. The storage materials I have requested will be used to hold and stack materials in creative spaces. I believe the storage and organizational materials I'm asking for will drastically help our classroom run more efficiently, and therefore increase our productivity and time spent learning.
Donations to this project will improve my classroom by allowing my students to have more possible books to read.
I strongly believe that this will encourage my students to read more often, as they will have more books they are interested in. Research strongly suggests that literacy improves as reading increases. Research also strongly suggests that high literacy skills lead to higher success later in life. I would like to set my students on the right path to attain both.
