As the music teacher, I teach every student in my small-town school; 550 students come through my door every week. They are smart, inquisitive, insightful, and oh-so funny! They constantly make me laugh!
My students need to learn and explore the world around them by moving, dancing, playing, and creating!
Providing the supplies my students need to succeed is so important as the majority of students in our school district come from low-income households and our school budgets are very limited. I believe EVERY child deserves a quality education, and I post projects that fill the gap so my students get the same education as their more affluent peers. In our Orff inspired classroom, we focus on making music, moving expressively or with the beat, and out-of-the-box creative thinking to ready my students or higher education and for life!
My Project
The most important reason is to make music is for music's sake, but there's no denying the marriage between music and other disciplines! We need supplies to power our classroom with STEAM!
Our use of classroom instruments is one of the most interesting and engaging ways to study the mathematical relationship of sounds through rhythm.
Students learn how to divide a beat in to it's fractional parts, and how whole beats fit in to larger unit, like measures. We explore both simple (based on 2's) and compound (based on 3's) time, first performing rhythms created by someone else, then writing our own equations to fit in to measures. Students stretch their mathematical skills across the curriculum in our STEM lessons! To do this, we need some basic classroom supplies - instrument stands - so that we can get our instruments out and set up quickly for class and to use during our lessons.
This will also allow us to move our instruments in to formation for our Math Night performance, where we'll be doing another STEAM project, a performance of the musical BUGZ! During the musical, we'll be integrating environmental science and music to learn and teach the other grade levels about entomology. This equipment is critical to this project!
Thank you so much for considering our project to make power our music room with STEAM!
