Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I currently work with middle school students who range from illiterate to four grade levels behind. I need help creating a classroom library with differentiated levels and engaging books that make students WANT to read.
My students come to YES because their current district is failing.
At YES, Youth Engaged in Service, we ask students to become leaders within their community. Leaders need to learn about the world around them and different perspectives and yet they have access in the classroom to less than a hundred books for my 150 students. Community and financial resources are extremely scarce and for most, my library will be their only opportunity to check out books.
My Project
The books requested range in difficulty and by subject. I want my students to be able to not only read books that they will feel successful in reading but also pick subjects that interests them. 100% of our students WILL go to college and I want to ensure that when they attend their university of choice that they have as much literature exposure of their more affluent counterparts.
For my extremely low readers these books provide an opportunity for them to finally have a book at their independent reading level. Providing opportunities for them to be successful is essential in reinvesting them in the hard work they have ahead to catch up with their classmates.
My students may not ever have the chance to go to another country or experience other states, but they CAN read about them!
These books will provide opportunities to experience things my students might not otherwise have. I sincerely thank you for joining me in providing opportunities for some extremely dedicated future leaders.
