This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend a middle school of 794 children, including 73% Black, 21% Hispanic, and, 4% Asian, Multi-racial or Caucasians. Special needs students make up 13% of our students and 15% of the students speak a language other than English. According to end of grade test scores in the spring, almost 75% of our students are not proficient in Language Arts skills, which include skills such as comprehension and reading for meaning. In addition, 45% of our eighth grade students read below grade level. The families in our community have an average income of less than $50,000. Our school is a Title I school, with over 95% of our students qualifying for free meals.
The students in our first ever online book club are passionate about books and sharing their favorite authors.
They love to read and enjoy their time together so much that they requested to meet not just once, but twice a week. When I finish reading a chapter, they ask for more!
My Project
One absolutely positive experience for our students during virtual learning has been our online book club after school. Students who normally cannot participate due to the lack of transportation can now join us.
The books selected for our book club provide a fun way to learn about quality literature outside the classroom.
The club provides a safe social outlet for our students to express their feelings about the books we read. The experience gives them the opportunity to view characters in different situations and develop empathy for others. Discussing the books provides students different perspectives on the same text.
