Do you remember what it was like to be the "outsider" at your school? The feelings of isolation and loneliness that may have overwhelmed you as a newcomer are not individual to you. The fiction unit that my class is beginning to study focuses on what it means to belong.
My students are great kids with the potential to do incredible things.
They are limited by resources that are unavailable to them due to the high poverty of the area in which we live. My goal for them is to expand their world view. They do not want to grow up without at least an understanding of other people.
My Project
Because literature can be a way to reach the hearts and minds of others, I want to develop an English library that has classroom sets of ethnically and culturally diverse novels. I am requesting a classroom set of "The Outsiders" by SE Hinton. I want my students to recognize that their social group is not the only one in the world; I want them to value others and to appreciate that the world is a big place that has room for all of us.
I think that understanding and compassion are the keys that unlock prejudice. I want to help my students get started in the right direction by showing them that having open hearts and minds can lead to better understanding.
You can make a difference for my students.
They are great kids that need the opportunity to read and tie texts to their lives. By donating for this classroom library, we can ensure that these kids reach their highest potential.
