Turning My Classroom Into Mario Land!

My students need materials for a week long engaging week of Mario Land. We need scooters to make our karts, crawling through tunnels, tarps and paper to disguise the classroom, and hats to create the costumes.

My Students

My students are loving, hardworking, and driven second graders! Each strives to make the best of each day regardless of their academic and personal struggles. My students need extra help in all academic areas and constantly need extra time to truly learn a particular skill. Although they have these challenges, our students work hard to achieve not only in English but in Spanish within our dual language program.

Our students live in an urban area and the vast majority come from low-income homes.

Our school does not only provide a nurturing environment for our students, but a place where they can truly feel successful.

Each of my students comes to school to learn. At times this desire is overpowered by situations they cannot control. We believe in their abilities and want nothing more than to see them achieve these important skills they will use in their daily lives.

My Project

My students come from low income families. My class is very hooked on video games this year! I thought what would better than bringing the video game environment to them by changing our classroom into Mario Land for a few weeks. Using the green and red hats and mustaches the students would become the characters Maria and Luigi and go through a series of engaging, rigorous academic challenges throughout the week. I would use the tarps to hang around the room to make it look just like the setting of Mario land. We would be on teams to create their own Mario kart using the wheeled platforms and race through stories to find the character, setting, problems and solution. The students would work through a series of academic challenges to level up throughout the week just like being in a video game! Students select their tunnel to crawl through. Each tunnel has a different number of passages. Another level would be Mario Kart! Here the students practice identifying text structures in a passage to help them organize the most important details. The students roll their partner down to the end of the path, collect a short passage, roll them back, decide the character, setting, problem and solution, and repeat until the level was complete. The next level would be prize boxes which would be used from boxes like Mario jumps to get. They would have their vocabulary words and definition and they would have to match them all up to move on.

My students need an environment that is fun and engaging especially when the content becomes difficult.

Using all these props in the classroom, the students would be hooked and ready to learn! Setting the stage to engage will get my readers passionate about learning.
