My students need a variety of math materials such as games, real-world problem solving, and facts mastery tools to help them build their math skills confidence.
"The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery" Mark Van Doren said. My goal in math class is to do just that! I want my students to feel that they all "can" solve math problems, no matter the difficulty.
Many of my 4th grade students find math frustrating and have developed a negative attitude toward it.
I have found that they thrive on hands-on exploration. We have recently begun guided math groups. They love being able to work in small groups either with myself or with peers and work with a variety of tools. By having different types of games available in class, it is my hope that all my students will be saying " I can!" instead of "I can't" in class.
My Project
Having resources such as "Beat the Clock" where they are only competing against themselves and not others will help those who know they struggle with fact recall on an individual basis. The partner games will be a great addition to our guided math rotation as will the Party math (tying in real world applications).
Your donation will make it possible for my students to get hands-on experience solving math problems and strengthening their basic fact fluency.
They will also be provided an opportunity to engage in authentic math conversations with other students through the playing of games.
