Celebrating Black History Month

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are the essence of capable. They are inspiring individuals who face a lot of adversity. 100% of my students receive free breakfast and lunch as well as Friday blessing bags to prevent hunger over the weekend. They come to school without the appreciation of education. They come here first to be loved and taken care of. Once we are able to teach them about love we can begin to teach my students about school.

100% of my students have come to me reading below grade level.

Many of them start the year with significant behavior challenges. Even with the cards they have been dealt they transform into the most beautiful butterflies. They matter!

My Project

I have completely changed my way of teaching. Some would say I've gone rogue-or against the grain.

My students are lacking so many experiences in life.

Experiences many people take for granted-trips to colleges, vacation destinations, monument visits, zoos, rollercoaster rides, etc. Because of their lack of experiences it is so difficult for them to make connections to things they are reading. Lack of connections leads to lack of comprehension. We can fix this! We can begin to remedy this problem with virtual reality.

Using a VR set could literally be new experiences at our fingertips. I am teaching thematic units and want my students to EXPERIENCE the things we are learning. We are learning about the 7 wonders of the world-Help me, help them SEE it with their own eyes.
