Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

You want to read, but every book you pick up is too hard for you. You start to read and you get stuck on a word. The teacher is busy with a small group. There is no one to read with you. Read-along books help bridge the gap in knowledge for the emerging reader. They open a door to knowledge.

Most of my students come from an Hispanic background.

Sometimes there is no one at home that speaks English. No one sits by their bed at night and reads them stories in English. When their parents get home at night they are often too tired to help with homework. My students make tremendous progress in learning English on their own. Some of my students live in shelters downtown. Their families are busy providing the necessities of life. They have no time to support academic development.

My Project

With read-along books the students will be able to hear someone read to them about subjects that are interesting. The books support learning that is already being done in the classroom. Students who are slow readers will have a chance to increase their knowledge through reading along. There are 4 books with each set so students can read together in a group. They will be able to take books home with an individual CD player and do additional reading.

Lastly, students will be engaged in meaningful work in the classroom either individually or in a small group.

This enables me to work one-on-one with some students. All the titles will help students meet grade level standards in reading.
