I teach first grade in a working class neighborhood in Brooklyn. Most of my students are of Caribbean descent. As I teach my students how to read I always face great challenges when it comes to reading comprehension. Many of my students learn to decode (sound out words) although they don't understand what they read. Research has shown that children from more economically advantaged backgrounds have much richer vocabularies than those less fortunate. I would like to try and improve my students vocabulary and reading comprehension using materials for the overhead projector. My students are always fascinated when we use the overhead projector and are very attentive to lessons when they have this exciting visual stimulus. My school has provided overhead projectors to the teachers with overhead math kits, but no materials for language arts. The overhead materials would breathe life into vocabulary and comprehension lessons. There are a number of different overhead activities that I feel would help my students become better readers. The activities focus on vocabulary building, reading comprehension and grammar.
