Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Over the last seven years, the media programs at our school have grown significantly. Now that students are well-versed in journalism and photography, we want to marry those skills and branch out into broadcast journalism. In order to do that, we need more equipment.
Students at this school come from a high poverty and high crime area.
School is often one of the only places where they feel safe and supported and get to just be "kids." As such, our programs aim to really give them beneficial experiences that they find practical.
My Project
We have asked for materials that will help us incorporate video production into our classroom. We need microphones and other accessories that will help us use the digital cameras we all ready have as video cameras. Right now, we aren't able to capture sound very well so we need materials to help us do that--like boom mics and lapel mics. So we have asked for some microphone kits, lighting materials and camera mounts. Working with these new tools will help us improve our videos and take them to a professional level.
With these new materials, students will be able to build on the skills they all ready have. They have been practicing what they know for a full semester and are ready to take on something new. By bringing a video component into yearbook and newspaper, those students will be able to try reporting in a new style as well.
Giving students more opportunities and experiences will help them find new passions.
There is so much out there for students to learn and these materials will help students explore a new type of media that they aren't familiar with yet.
When students are able to explore their opportunities, with materials that help them be successful, they learn more. We want our students to be able to use mics when filming so they can learn the importance of broadcast journalism and communicating in a new way.
