My students need a diverse collection of picture books whose themes are inclusion, love, and acceptance. Qualities I want my students to display to everyone they encounter.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"What matters more than the fact that children read is why they read and how they read." This quote by Alfie Kohn has been in my head for weeks. We have Accelerated Reader as a component of our reading program. Unfortunately when asked why they read, every child stated to reach my AR goal. No one said because I love to read.
By implementing classroom book a day, I hope to foster a pure and genuine love of reading.
Fifty fifth graders will grace my room with their presence in August 2018. It's my desire to create an idyllic classroom library to increase their love of reading.
Based on statistics and data we are considered a high poverty school because everyone receives free breakfast/lunch. However, my students are driven and motivated to succeed by their parents, extended family members, the faculty, and staff of my dedicated school
My Project
These books will enable me to implement a new component in my reading program. Reading a picture everyday to fifth grade students will enrich their vocabulary, word choice, and grammar. The picture books I selected will increase conversations about the topic, theme, and author's purpose. Requested titles include Hello, My Name is Octicorn, Porch Lies, We're All Wonders, The Bad Seed, Nerdy Birdy, Nothing Rhymes with Orange, Martina & Chrissie, Let Me Finish!, These Shoes, and The Invisible Boy.
My main reason for writing this project is to acquire picture books to increase the joy of reading in my classroom.
We will not have AR tests, write essays, or book summaries with these books. We will have a class discussion about the character's emotions and interactions. Classroom Book A Day will increase our development into a cohesive, accepting, and united classroom.
