I will be teaching First grade in the fall. This is a Title 1 school in a small rural town. There are about 470 students ranging from Pre-K to fifth grade. 67% of the population is white and 23% is Hispanic.
My class will be a new classroom, so I have minimal materials.
The students have a wide range of ability and needs that I have to meet. The school believes in inclusion for all special needs students. I can have up to 7 EC students in my classroom. There is a high ESL population at my school and many are currently in the lower grades. It is vital to reach these students in Kindergarten and first grade so they will be successful in the upper grades.
My Project
I currently have minimal materials for my first grade classroom. I am new to first grade and am going into a classroom that does not have everything I need to provide a rich learning environment for my students.
I am requesting various hands-on materials for my students to use during math and guided reading rotations.
The lacing beads will be used in several word work center activities. Students will have the opportunity to build their sight words with the beads. The unifex cubes, teddy bears, bugs, buttons and counting chips will be used in small group rotations as well as in math centers as various counting tools to assist students with adding, subtracting and graphing. The magnet numbers will be used in small group and math centers as well to allow students to create number sentences and to create numbers to compare greater than and less than. The scoops will be used to scoop out the various counting materials in centers. These materials will provide my students with different tools for math and word work to make it more fun, interesting and hands-on.
