I am a fourth grade teacher at a Title I school. Over 25% (200 students) at our school are evacuees from Hurricane Katrina. I have 17 Katrina survivors in my classroom of 26 students. The majority of students in my classroom are considered to be high-risk. They are not learning at their grade level and have either already been held back a grade or are likely to be unable to be promoted to fifth grade at the end of this year. Most of the high risk students have complications at home - low income, a parent incarcerated, living with a non-parent caregiver... I am always looking for ways to engage my students in learning - verbal encouragement, small rewards for good behavior and effort and so on. In the area of math, I would like to combine the incentive with the learning by using the LeapFrog Turbo Extreme Handheld. Students love these kind of games; I could encourage appropriate classroom behavior by awarding 'play time' on these devices and the 'play time' for the students to learn much needed math facts. The Turbo Extreme Handhelds come with four levels so I could easily tailor the learning time to each student's needs - from basic addition and subtraction facts to division and percentages. These devices would be an incredibly valuable tool in my classroom. Thank you for considering my request!
