Imagine having to print your final paper or job application but not having the printer at home to do so. Imagine going to school to print it and learning that there is no ink in the printer to print your exam or application. Imagine feeling completely discouraged because you cannot print your work.
This is the life of more than 500 students who attend our South Bronx school.
They are inner-city high school students living in one of our nation's toughest neighborhoods. Most of them hope to be the first person to graduate from high school in the family and hopefully attend and finish college. Nearly one hundred percent of them live below the poverty level. The overwhelming majority come from broken homes, foster care, or group homes.
My students do not have the basic school supplies, let alone the technology they need to learn and succeed in the 21st Century. As their teacher, my job is to help our most learning-challenged and disadvantaged students work through their difficult lives and discover a path to high school graduation, college and lifelong success.
My Project
My students were fortunate to receive a new printer recently from the generous participants of DonorsChoose. This new printer will engage my students in an environment where they can obtain the self-confidence to freely print their ideas and feelings regarding the world around them, as they learn important social and life skills that prepare them to graduate from high school and go to college.
In order to make this new printer available as a resource for my students, we need ink cartridges to use with it. Many of our disadvantaged students frequently lament the fact that even if they have a printer at home, they do not have the financial resources to afford the expensive ink cartridges to print their homework assignments or school projects.
With your help, our learning-challenged students will print their notes in a large font that they can easily read. This will allow my most struggling and at-risk students to fully participate in classroom activities.
Your donation will help our students to use technology and media to overcome obstacles, compensate for their learning challenges, succeed in school, and apply to college.
You will give them the tools they require to excel in classes and earn higher grades, which will give them a greater chance of getting into and graduating from college. You will enable them to register for the SAT and apply to college. You will turn despair into hope by giving them an opportunity to succeed.
