This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students live in a high poverty neighborhood. Many live in a single parent or grandparent household where that parent/grandparent works to provide for the family on a tight budget that supplies the necessities. They attend a K-8 elementary school in a tough neighborhood. The students are in sixth grade, which is a critical year for many of them, because they struggle with wanting to be independent and needing guidance. As if this struggle was not enough to deal with they are exposed to the reality of poverty and crime on a daily basis. They want to succeed and to compete on a level playing field with their peers. The needs are great but they are willing to work hard.

My Project

A listening center and a listening library will help struggling readers analyze and understand grade level text and increase proficiency. Many students struggle when they are below grade level and need to go back to internalize the text.

Level the playing field for struggling readers with this project.

Research shows the more struggling readers are exposed to a complex text their reading proficiency will increase. This project will give my students access to the text beyond what I can give them in reading workshop. This is a task we cannot fail and my students deserve this because they are willing to work hard and become better readers.
