Help me give my students literacy-based activities through teletherapy services during this pandemic and brick-and-mortar services when school resumes.
"Every child has a different learning style and pace. Every child is unique, not only capable of learning but capable of succeeding"-Robert John Meehan
Being a speech-language pathologist working in two Title One schools is a challenge that I love.
Most of my students come from low socioeconomic households with little funding to provide literacy-based activities while at home. My students have multiple disabilities including articulation, fluency, and language disorders. What most of them share is a desire to learn and become more successful in their general education settings and ultimately in life.
The majority of my students also receive enhance learning support services due to learning disabilities, primarily due to delays in reading skills. Skillful reading is achieved by combining language comprehension and word recognition components. Literacy-based therapy addresses these areas encouraging the transfer of success to the general education setting.
My Project
These are unprecedented times that are requiring school-based speech-language pathologists to become creative with technology in order to provide services to our students. The document scanner and headset with microphone will be put to use immediately as our school district is requiring this new method of services to be implemented immediately.
These office supplies will be useful now during the pandemic, and after when we return to normalcy, in providing literacy-based activities to my students.
Using the scanner, I can bring books to life and make materials I already use to become interactive during teletherapy and on the computers when I return to school. I consider this temporary delivery service model to be a challenge that will only increase my skill set for my return to the classroom.
