Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Through reading and storytelling my classes come alive! My students are learning to read, speak, and understand spoken Spanish. They are focused on attaining a life skill and expanding their opportunities through language acquisition.
I teach to the Middles!
My students are a diverse group of young people who are caring, funny, active, and curious. All of my students are in different parts of their journey of self-discovery. Their interests and passions change daily but their commitment to acquiring Spanish has not wavered.
My Project
Reading is one of the best ways to grow proficient in a second language. The novel Tumba provides rich cultural information which is delivered through compelling and comprehensible language. The novel is written for beginning learners of Spanish through the use of high-frequency vocabulary which is repeated without feeling repetitive and includes many cognates drawing on students’ prior knowledge of their native language.
Through this novel study, my students will further develop their language acquisition while learning about important cultural aspects of the celebration, Día de Muertos.
My students will also learn to value and respect diversity which better prepares them for our multicultural world. Thank you for your support in helping us develop our language acquisition and cultural competence!
