¿Tu eres bilingüe como yo?/Are you bilingual like me?
My students need 23 Spanish or bilingual books, plus two library sets (Paperback classics and Dr Seuss) for read-alouds during story time and enhancing our exploration of themes.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our pre k English Language Learners are so proud that they are bilingual! Reading great children's literature in both English and Spanish helps our students develop great vocabularies and reading comprehension skills in both languages.
We are a Pre K charter school in an urban area that supports children with special needs in inclusion classrooms and we have a growing English Language Learner population.
Our Pre K students are curious learners. Our thematic units allow students to learn through hands-on exploration of themes like colors, water, construction and growing. Through storybooks related to our theme, these topics of study come to life and students make important connections to their lives and build their imaginations.
My Project
Our school is a Pre K-only charter, and this project will provide quality Spanish children's books for six classrooms' thematic learning throughout the year! It is important that we can provide great books in English and Spanish to enhance our learning. Through our read alouds we learn essential understandings about our theme and the world around us. For our English Language learners to benefit from bridging between English and Spanish vocabulary, we need to have quality literature in both languages. Our goal is for students to understand and apply the key vocabulary and messages of such classic books as "The Giving Tree" in both languages.
Powerful stories like these that instill a love for reading and learning are an essential part of a quality curriculum for all our students. Your generosity will ensure all 90 Pre K students will have high-quality read aloud books in Spanish to enhance their learning.
Having quality Spanish literature and read aloud books is something that will benefit our school for years to come.
Each year our thematic units grow richer and stronger through the resources we add, the questions students ask, and the books that allow our students to experience everything there is to know about a topic. As there is generally less available curriculum-wise in Spanish than English, your donation is providing a much-needed resource that will enhance our instruction overall.
