My students need a tablet with pouch that is similar to their peers, to help them feel a part of the community, to have an age appropriate activity, and to help with communication.
Spend time with any high school students and what are they doing -- using technology! Cell phones, iPads, iPods, Tablets, games, and more. My students see this and would enjoy it as much as any of their peers but need help being able to access it and learn how to use it!
My students, who all have autism, are limited in their communication and social skills.
These students are in a self-contained classroom and their abilities range from non-verbal to being able to communicate but struggle with comprehending and engaging in a socially appropriate way. Many of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and do not have the exposure to electronic devices. At the high school level, we not only work on basic communication, reading, writing, math, etc. but we are also working on work skills, domestic living tasks, preparing for transition out of high school, and social skills. Unlike a typical high school student, we have to TEACH our students how to take a break and what to do during that time, what is appropriate, how do you act, who do you talk to, etc. It is one of the hardest skills they have to learn when they they get to high school.
As with many things, something like this doesn't fit into the budget at school. We work with what we have and we keep building our programs but extras, like this tablet, help us get our students to a place where they are ready to be active and engaged members of the community. It takes extra time to teach them how to use it but that is why we do our jobs! I get really excited when I think about the end results of the students learning how to use a Tablet! I can see them when they go out into the community at a job they are learning and it is the break time. They can take out their tablet and engage in something that is socially appropriate instead of pacing around the room or starting at things they look "just like everyone else"! When they are ready to transition from high school and get set up with a job, they will be ready to go "just like everyone else" because they can not only do the job they are hired to do but they can keep it together during their breaks
This project will make a difference to my students because it will help them be "just like everyone else".
I keep saying it because for these students sometimes that is all they want to do! They know they are different and they know they struggle so we a striving to help them build the bridge between themselves and their peers! Thank you for your dedication to helping teachers and students. It is the simple things that can make such a difference in their lives.
