My students need need flexible seating options like gaming rockers, yoga balls, and padded stools to help assist them with focus, sensory input, and production.
You hear them before you see them: at 8:15AM as the bell rings, 130-12 to 13 year-olds round the corner from the school’s foyer into the 7th grade hallway. Some are still laughing from stories shared while eating breakfast in the cafeteria; some are barely awake, but at least smile at you as they pass on their way to lockers; some are all about business, already formulating plans as to how to convince you to give them another extra credit assignment.
The students at Broad Meadows Middle School in Quincy, MA are as varied as the snowflakes that usually keep us in school until the end of June!
Each one brings a different vibration and color to my classroom. My students, regardless of socio-economic backgrounds, ethnicities, and gender are kind, giving, and welcoming of all types.
My Project
My Reading Skills classroom will be pioneering flexible seating, which empowers the students to choose the type of desk and chair that works best for their type of learning. My students are currently sitting in molded, one-piece chair desks donated from a local college. Many students have complained of discomfort and lack of adequate space to work. And any student who is left-handed finds the desks impossible. By having new floor pillows, chairs, and a variety of options of seating, I hope to meet the needs of all my students.
Flexible seating has shown to improve student physical and mental health by allowing them to move, bounce, rock, lean or stand.
It also helps students who have ADD, ADHD, and ASD to stay focused and productive. When students are comfortable, they are more willing to work and share, which leads to lively discussions and constructive collaboration.
I'm incredibly excited to share this new opportunity with my in-coming and future 7th graders.
