I am a speech-language pathologist working in a full inclusion school for grade levels transitional kindergarten through high school. The students I work with are have severe communication challenges due to conditions such as autism, cerebral palsy and other medical issues that impair their ability to express themselves. They are non-verbal or severely unintelligible and require assistive devices to access their curriculum and show the world who they are by expressing their own authentic thoughts through augmentative and alternative communication methods.
Even with their challenges, they are eager to immerse themselves in the rigors of learning with their neuro-typical peers.
These students are curious, enthusiastic and creative. They are fearless when it comes to technology and, as children of the 21st century, they need tools to engage with the world.
My Project
My students are non-verbal or severely unintelligible and require iPads to access their curriculum and show the world who they are by expressing their own authentic thoughts through augmentative and alternative communication methods. These iPads will be loaded with augmentative and alternative communication apps for the students to use to communicate what is really inside of them with the outside world. The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them a voice.
The students will be able to participate in class tasks with their neurotypical peers using these devices.
